TA, TRL, and the Buffer Layer
Transition Altitude (TA) is published on departure charts. Transition Level (TRL) is dynamically assigned by ATC or ATIS during descent based on local barometric pressure. The airspace between is the Transition Layer.
Transition altitude (TA) on climb and transition level (TRL) on descent establish the boundary between local terrain clearance altimetry and standardized enroute vertical separation.
