FLIGHT OPERATIONS

Flight Levels and Standard Altimeter Calibration

Why barometric pressure reference switches to standard pressure above the transition altitude and semicircular cruise rules.

MODO LEITURA ATIVO
BRIEFING ESSENCIAL

In enroute cruising flight, all aircraft synchronize their altimeters to standard atmospheric pressure (29.92 inHg / 1013.2 hPa) to guarantee vertical separation.

01

Altitudes vs Flight Levels (FL)

Below the transition altitude, flight is conducted in 'Altitude' using local QNH. Above transition level, flight is conducted in 'Flight Levels' (FL) using 29.92 inHg / 1013.2 hPa.

The semicircular rule mandates odd flight levels (FL330, FL350) for magnetic tracks 000°-179° and even flight levels (FL340, FL360) for magnetic tracks 180°-359°.
