The Standard Traffic Pattern: Legs, Altitudes & Radio Calls

A complete guide to airport traffic patterns: upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, and final legs with stabilized approach tips.

A traffic pattern organizes visual aircraft traffic around an airport, establishing predictable flow, spacing, and stabilized approach geometry.

Pattern Geometry & Entry Procedures

Standard pattern altitude is typically 1,000 ft AGL. It consists of Departure/Upwind, Crosswind, Downwind, Base, and Final legs. Midfield 45-degree entries into the downwind leg remain standard at uncontrolled fields.
