Understanding SID and STAR Instrument Procedure Charts
How to read departure transitions, arrival constraints, speed restrictions, and top-of-descent profiles in ICAO SID and STAR charts.
Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) are published instrument flight procedures that streamline traffic between airports and enroute airway networks.
Standard Instrument Departures (SID)
A SID originates at the runway departure end and specifies initial heading, climb gradients (e.g., 5% to 4,000 ft) for terrain clearance, and enroute transition waypoints.
Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STAR)
A STAR channels enroute traffic to terminal airspace and initial approach fixes (IAF). Altitude constraints ('At', 'At or Above', 'At or Below') and speed restrictions must be programmed into the FMS.
