How the Instrument Landing System (ILS) Works

The Instrument Landing System (ILS) is the worldwide standard precision approach aid, providing lateral localizer guidance and vertical glide slope guidance down to Category I/II/III minima.

Localizer & Glide Slope Signals

The Localizer operates on VHF (108.10 to 111.95 MHz) to provide centerline guidance. The Glide Slope operates on UHF to project a standard 3-degree descent glide path.

Beam convergence makes indicator needles progressively more sensitive as the aircraft nears the runway threshold.

Flying the Approach & Decision Altitude (DA)

At the published Decision Altitude (DA), if required visual references with the runway environment are not acquired, a missed approach must be initiated immediately without delay.
